EDUCATE TO SELF-REGULATE | SILVER NONFICTION BOOK AWARD

I'm honoured to share that Educate to Self-Regulate has been awarded the Silver Nonfiction Book Award by the Nonfiction Authors Association — recognised through an independent review process for its clarity, usefulness, and ability to translate Self-Regulated Learning into meaningful classroom practice.

What stood out in the review was not just the depth of the content, but how directly it directs teachers toward application — with chapter summaries, Take Action steps, and guidance that any educator can put to work in their context.

To everyone who has been reading it, sharing it, and putting it into practice in their schools — that's where the real power lies.

2026 THOUGHT LEADERS SERIES | DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION QUEENSLAND

In a world where student agency, motivation, and persistence are increasingly under pressure, Self-Regulated Learning is no longer a pedagogical nicety — it is a necessity. The question for educators is not whether to teach students how to learn, but how to build the systems, language, and practice to make it stick.

I'm proud to be collaborating with Dr Amy Berry and the Department of Education Queensland as part of the 2026 Thought Leaders Series — supporting Queensland State Schools and system leaders to strengthen student engagement and Self-Regulated Learning. Together, we are equipping educators with the clarity, tools, and shared language needed to intentionally develop student agency, and helping schools move from research to classroom reality in ways that are practical and sustainable.

CONTRIBUTING TO NEW EARLI VOLUME ON SELF-REGULATED LEARNING

I’m co-authoring a chapter in the forthcoming EARLI volume Empowering Teachers for Tomorrow’s Classrooms: Professional Competencies and the Promotion of Self-Regulated Learning. Together with Professor Deborah Pino-Pasternak, Dr. Samuel Fowler, and Dr. Rosalyn Muir, we explore the challenges educators face when implementing self-regulated learning (SRL), drawing on insights from research, policy, and classroom practice.

We’re honoured to contribute to this global publication, strengthening teacher professional competencies to foster SRL in today’s and tomorrow’s classrooms.

Having Shyam as my coach has honestly changed my life. In the short time we have been working together he has been able to help me achieve what I’ve wanted and I’m excited to see what happens going forward. Shyam’s been there to inspire me. From the first time we sat down [together], I walked away with a spring in my step. I could write forever about how inspiring he is but it’s something you really need to experience for yourself.
